Qingyuanshan overlooks the ancient trading city of Quanzhou, that Marco Polo visited in the 13th century. On its slopes is an impressively large Sung Dynasty carved statue of a sitting Laotzu, and remnants of Buddhist Grottos that were mostly destroyed by fighting between two factions of the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.
