| One of three numinous mountains, the 出羽三山 Dewa Sanzan, in northern Japan in Yamagata Prefecture; the others being 月山 Gassan and 湯殿山 Yudonosan. Originally a Buddhist mountain it is now totally Shinto. Basho climbed all three of these mountains on his trip to northern Japan. |
