Seaview Tower Evening View
        Su Shi 1036-1101

The tidal bore's crest
        rolls by like a thread,
Suddenly
        below the tower
                piles of frothy snow.
You must arrive when the tide is full,
Then you'll see silver mountains
        twenty or more!

The wind blows rain
        slanting into the tower,
This magnificent requires fine prose.
Rain passes
        surface flattens
                sea turns jade blue,
A flash of lightening
        drags the golden snake away.

Where green mountains break off
a pagoda rises layer on layer,
From the far shore
        people shout back and forth,
Over the river
the autumn wind rises anxiously,
Carrying the sound
of drum and bell to Xixing.

Notes:
The Hangzhou tidal bore can be viewed at full moon, preferably in August and September, from the Wanghailou in 海寧 Haining, between Shanghai and Hangzhou. It is still today an awesome sight! A long line of surf streaching to the horizon churning at 10 miles per hour up the Qiantang River toward Hangzhou.

Xixing is a section of nearby Hangzhou.
