宋之問

Crossing the Han River
        Song Zhiwen 656-712
Beyond the mountain range
        no word from home,
Already many seasons gone.
Nearing my home town
        my heart thumps,
Cowardly
        don't dare ask
                a villager
if all is well at home.

Dù Hànjiāng
Sòng Zhīwèn 656-712

Lǐngwài yīnshū duàn,
Jīng dōng fù lì chūn.
Jìn xiāng qīng gèng qiè,
Bù gǎn wèn lái rén.

Translator: Dongbo 東波

Notes:
Song Zhiwen was returning from exile in the far south, beyond the Plum Pass in Guangdong, when he crossed the Han River, somewhere between Wuhan and Xiangyang. Not knowing if his family was alive or well, he didn't have the courage to ask a villager who passed by.
