Boarding a Boat On Ming River
        Nguyen Huy Oanh 1722-1789

Over heights
        across obstacles
                past a lone wall,
We finally reach the Ming River
        where the river road opens.
The people here
        also have a place
                called Floating Rock Station,
The scenery looks like the mountains
        and streams in a painting.
Protecting a dyke
        and old tree
                its twisted roots thick,
Joking with travelers
betel nut makes their cheeks red.
All the way Heaven's intent
        has offered its silent assistance,
A glorious sun rising
        and again a southern wind.

Notes:
A Southern wind was very important, for Nguyan Huy Oanh was going up stream in a northely direction.

From Liam Kelley's great book Beyond The Bronze Pillars, Envoy Poetry and the Sino-Vietnamese Relationship, U of Hawaii Press.
